Boat trip Ameland

Your holiday starts once you arrive in Holwerd. You can immediately enjoy the special views over the Wadden Sea, declared as UNESCO World Heritage. We recommend a beautiful, well-organized boat trip over the Wad! On the Website of Wagenborg Passagiersdiensten you will find all practical information about the boat trip, as well as the rates and the timetables.

Horse Rescue Boat

During the demonstration of the horse rescue boat on Ameland, 10 sturdy horses pull the rescue boat over the beach, through the surf in the sea. This event reminds of earlier times, because if a ship is really in distress, the modern Anne Margaretha leaves the harbour at high speed. The demonstration shows that rescuing drowning persons and providing assistance to ships in distress near Ameland has a very long history.

Lighthouse of Hollum

The lighthouse in Hollum dates from 1880 and is 55m high. It has not been used since 2005 and is therefore accessible, although you must climb 236 steps. Along the way you will see expositions about the life of lighthouse keepers, but also about ships that got into trouble. At the top you will find the office, as it was used by the lighthouse keeper in the past.

Molen de Verwachting (Mill)

Molen de Verwachting is located on the outskirts of Hollum. It is an octagonal windmill, that is still in operation. It mainly grinds corn, although it can also grind mustard. The mill is a replica of the mill that was built here in 1840.

Natuurcentrum Ameland (Nature centre)

The Natuurcentrum Ameland shows the rich underwater nature of the island. You will see various aquariums with fishes that live in the Wadden Sea. In addition, you will also find information about seals, porpoises and sperm whales that are occasionally spotted here. The tower offers a magnificent view of the island and the Wadden Sea.

Bunkermuseum Ameland

In the Bunkermuseum you can find a lot of information about how the island got to deal with wars. The bunker has been turned and furnished into a museum now. You will find many relics from the war as well as stories from old residents. There is also a diorama. The entrance is the former holiday home Dorax.

Museum Sorgdrager

Just like on many other Wadden Islands, islanders practiced whaling. This house was built by Cornelis Sorgdrager in 1751. It had to serve as a residence for whalers. The gate of the museum consists of two whale jaws.
